Alston Camping Trip

Ever Changing Sunset by Sarah Alston

We decided to pack up and go camping last weekend. We had originally intended to go to Steamboat Rock, but all of the campsites were full, so we settled on Second Beach on the Olympic Peninsula near Forks, Washington.

We did not, however, realize that it was a mile hike up an incline and down to the beach. Had I known that, we would have packed better. As it was, the kids were troopers, and did the whole hike with no complaints- even though they carried massive amounts of camping gear!

We spent two nights there. The first day was very foggy, but the day we left was clear and beautiful. It was great to pitch a tent in the sand next to the beach…until we started to worry about the tide washing us away. Sam and I got little sleep both nights because we were both keeping an ear out for incoming waves…

All in all, it was a great trip, and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a great few days of camping!

Run!

Let's go fly a kite...

While the tide was out, we decided to go see what treasures we could find at the tide pools.

Us Alston’s LOVE those marshmallows! I was a good mom and let them have Smores for breakfast. Don’t you wish I was YOUR mom?

Us Alstons LOVE our smores!

If you ask Asa what his favorite thing about camping was, he’ll tell you that “Daddy taught me how to use the hatchet.”

And, it true Washington style, the sun finally came out…the day we left.

Sunshine at last!
